As the night ended on June 10th in Catonsville, MD, a lasting image was Pat Anthony standing over Diaz with the Light Heavyweight Championship held over his head after their match had ended. While the MiniBoss was left laying on the ground by the social media superstar, he still left the building as the Light Heavyweight Champion as a result of Anthony being disqualified. While Pat gained the upper hand on Diaz in this meeting, he did not leave with the championship.
This is yet another chapter in the on again, off again rivalry between "The MiniBoss" Diaz and #PatAnthony yielding the same result. Every time Anthony gains the upper hand, he finds a way to deny himself the prize that he has coveted ever since a technicality prevented him from winning the championship in 2013. While he puts up a valiant effort, he finds a way to snatch ultimate defeat from the jaws of victory. While he will receive more chances to win that championship down the road, July 8th will be the one and only time to grab the opportunity that is in front of him.
Pat Anthony has been entered into the F.I.G.H.T Championship Tournament. His first round opponent is Diaz and it is for the opportunity to advance and potentially win the very first F.I.G.H.T Pro Championship. While Pat could eventually earn a future title match down the line, this would be the one and only night that you can say that you were the very first champion. Championship gold, the potential prestige of winning the very first championship and bragging rights will be on the line. If there was any time to rise to the occasion and pull out a victory, July 8th would be the time.
A victory over Diaz in the first round could give the Social Media Superstar the momentum he needs to potentially win the entire tournament. While the rest of the tournament will most certainly not be a cakewalk, it will be much easier for Anthony after defeating an opponent who has had his number for the last 3 years.
A defeat to Diaz once again in the first round would send him to the back of the line for future title shots with F.I.G.H.T. It will be a long road back into the title picture after a 1st round loss. Mentally, a loss would be much more disastrous to his career. Pat will need to be the 2004 Boston Red Sox and rise to the occasion, or risk being the Atlanta Braves of the 90's.
Something to consider..... those 90's Braves did win the big one once.............
